Real Madrid will take on capital rivals Atletico in a repeat of the 2014 Champions League final after beating Manchester City 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Zinedine Zidane s men have a shot at claiming the club s 11th European crown at San Siro on May 28, having followed up last week s cagey goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium with a considerably more impressive showing in the semi-final second leg on Wednesday.
Madrid – boosted by Cristiano Ronaldo s return to fitness, but still without Karim Benzema – capitalised on yet another injury setback for City captain Vincent Kompany to take a first-half lead when Gareth Bale s delivery looped in off Fernando.
Manuel Pellegrini, seeking to ensure it was not his final European game at the helm, needed a resp…
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp joked he is six times happier than he was a year ago with his team top of the Premier League.
Their position may have slipped by the time they play Newcastle on New Year’s Day as Arsenal could reclaim top spot by beating Luton the day before, but it will still not be as bad as 12 months ago.
On January 2 they lost 3-1 at Brighton to sit sixth, 15 points behind the Gunners who were the then leaders.
With just one defeat, and that a controversial one at Tottenham, all season and having dropped only four points at home, Klopp is pleased to see his side back on track and ahead of schedule.
“Six times happier! I can’t even remember (the first game of 2023),” said Klopp when asked how he felt compared to last new year.

Robbie Neilson lamented Hearts’ wastefulness in front of goal as they lost 2-0 at home against a clinical Rangers.
The Tynecastle boss felt his side controlled long periods of a match in which they hit the woodwork twice and had a strong penalty claim waved away when Connor Goldson appeared to handle in the box.
However, cinch Premiership leaders Rangers held on to claim the three points following early goals from Alfredo Morelos and Joe Aribo.
Neilson said: “I’m frustrated because we had chances to score goals at the start, and then they had two very good finishes, which made it difficult for us.
“If we took our chances, it would have been a different ga…
Paris Saint-Germain have put Kylian Mbappé up for sale after leaving the France forward out of their squad for the pre-season tour of Japan.
Last month, Mbappé informed PSG that he would not take up the option of a one-year contract extension next summer but underlined his intention to remain in the French capital and leave on a free transfer. However, PSG will now listen to offers for the 24-year-old after the president Nasser Al-Khelaifi insisted Mbappé must sign a contract extension or leave the club he joined from Monaco in 2018 for £166m. PSG are understood to feel betrayed as they believe Mbappé has already agreed a free transfer with Real Madrid.

In sports, everyone is a winner—some people just win better than others. Like the NFL's Judge Dredd, who can finally claim victory in his war to take back the NFL from scum and villainy (a.k.a. Ben Roethlisberger's wang.) We have long known that Roger Goodell is the supreme legal authority in the land. His punishments go far beyond those of mere mortal prosecutors and judges. Where our jury system has failed, Goodell has picked up the slack—balancing the scales, so to speak. But with the coming suspension of Ben "Where Are My Pants?" Roethlisberger, the Commish may be crossing a new threshold of extra-judicial smackdowns. The first player ever to get banned simply for being a dick. Roethlisberger has never lost a lawsuit, never been charged with a crime, was neve…
